Ikat is a term that you will see often in today’s fashion. But have you ever wondered just what ikat is? The term, ikat comes from an Indonesian word meaning, “to tie” or “to bind”. The process is similar to tie dyeing. According to Wikepedia, “The defining characteristic of ikat is the dyeing of patterns, by means of bindings, into the threads before cloth construction, the weaving of the fabric, takes place. Herein lies the difference between ikat and tie-dye. In tie-dye the fabric is woven first and the resist bindings are then applied to the fabric which is dyed”. Various styles of woven ikat designs have been used throughout the world; it is possibly one of the oldest forms of textile decoration. Another interesting bit of trivia: “Traditionally, ikat are symbols of status, wealth, power and prestige. Because of the time and skill involved in weaving ikat, some cultures believe the cloth is imbued with magical powers.”
Many current tribal designs we see today, labeled Ikat, may not actually have been processed as such, but are copies of an ikat pattern. Here’s an example of a Faith Connection t-shirt. Add Tory Birch strappy sandals, a Jessica Simpson handbag, fun bangles and you’ve got a cute summer outfit!

Well, there’s my fashion lesson for today. Hope you can add a few Ikat-patterned pieces to your wardrobe. It doesn’t need to cost a bundle. I recently found a bright red ikat silk scarf from a Nepalese boutique; the owner was great about negotiating. It was a great find!
