free st. paddy’s day printable

by jani on March 7, 2013

I’m so happy to be a part of this fun Printable Party from Aly Brooks’s, Entirely Eventful blog. Aly supplied this darling St. Patrick’s Day printable and invited other bloggers to be creative in how we would use it.

I knew I wanted to frame it… however, I was not certain when I walked into the craft store,  just how I would be doing this. I’m not a crafter… I haven’t crafted since the mid-70s! Do you know that there is a complete wall filled with just glue?! I was overwhelmed! I think glue inventors sit around all day trying to come up with the next great glue idea so they can add it to the glue wall!

I ended up using good old fashion Elmer’s glue… it still works just fine!

I had an 11 x 14 black frame that I spray painted sparkly gold. I then covered the matting with a square piece of fabric that only cost a couple of dollars. Except for the part where HB accidentally sat on the glass as I was outside spray painting the frame, it all went rather smoothly. Thankfully, we didn’t have a repeat of Sabrina and I didn’t need to take my sweetie to the hospital to remove any broken glass from his buttocks. So all in all, it was a rather exciting crafting day!

I’m loving how this turned out and it looks perfect on my mantel!

The  talent behind the DYI (by the way, I had to look that acronym up when I first started following Pinterest way back when!) bloggers sometimes is mind boggling! I have some of the most talented friends. This project took me way out of my comfort zone! But, I had a lot of fun… and frustration… and happy moments… and really crazy moments… and I’m breathing a quasi-sigh of relief that I actually completed this project!

You can download the printable from Aly’s site and also check out all the other bloggers’ projects with the same image below.

Wishing all of you a very happy St. Patrick’s Day!

our favorite resident fowl

by jani on February 20, 2013

I’m in bed this week with the same cooties that have increased earnings for products like Kleenex, NyQuil, and Tylenol during this not-so-fun flu season. So while I recoup in bed, my one enjoyment is bird watching. We have purposely made our backyard a bird friendly environment. Our sweet little sparrows and other small feathered friends seem to be getting a bit out of control. But no need to fear… enter our resident sparrow hawk. It has been having a feast on our bird population and visits us often. The other day it was having a nice bath in our fresh melted snow. I wanted to see how close I could get to this beautiful hawk. I slowly increased my steps.

This is where we have a stare down. I felt like it was piercing straight through my lens.

Eyes enlarged… ready to take flight!

Hope you enjoyed these photos of our resident hawk. Do you love bird watching as much as I do? I’d love to hear!

cherry pine nut cookies

by jani on February 13, 2013

Since tomorrow is Valentine’s Day, I thought I’d dedicate this post to my loving companion of almost 30 years, HB! This recipe is a team effort… my idea… HB makes it! It works for us.  We love cooking with toasted pine nuts and add them to many of our recipes;  they just enhance the flavors.

  • 1/2 cup toasted pine nuts (toast in oven for 12 minutes at 325F degrees or until golden brown)
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped maraschino cherries
  • 2-4 Tbsp drained maraschino cherry syrup
  • 1  stick of unsalted butter
  • pinch of salt
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • 2 Tbsp honey
  • 1 cup flour

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In electric mixer beat butter, salt, sugar, honey, cherry juice, flour in that order. Fold in chilled toasted pine nuts and chopped cherries. Roll into balls (a little over an inch in diameter). Chill for 5 minutes in freezer. Dip fork into cold water and flatten each cookie. Bake for 12-15 minutes.

HB was a bachelor in 1983 –  I was a widow with four young children. We met, fell in love and were engaged within three weeks of meeting. Three months later we were married. He became instant husband and daddy to four little munchkins! It truly is a fairy tale romance and we are more in love today than we were on our wedding day, May 28, 1983!

I hope you enjoy these wonderful cookies. They are easy to make and taste scrump-dee-a-lishous!

This is for all you romantics in the world. Wishes do come true… and they can happen to you! Happy Valentine’s Day to all of my readers… and Honey Brent, I love you!
